Case study: Dow AgroSciences

Client

Dow AgroSciences is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company and focuses on researching technologies to make agriculture faster, better, more efficient, and more viable. At the time of this project, Dow AgroSciences had recently created a business sector called Advanced AgriTraits (AAT) in response to developments in the industry and in order to make contracts with retailers and providers less rigid.

Problem

Dow AgroSciences brought in IBC to assess the position of AAT in the agbiotech industry. Dow asked IBC to determine the cost structure of major competitors and if seed retailers would be interested in AAT.

Results

IBC built a financial model to help determine the factors most important to the success of their competitors and how those factors would implicate AAT’s success. The IBC team also conducted a phone survey of thirty-two companies and then performed a multi-objective value analysis of the data. With this information, IBC was able to provide Dow with a list of companies for AAT to target as potential customers.

Eric Schlorff, Global Market Intelligence Leader at Dow AgroSciences and former IBC student, said the following about his work with IBC:

“All IBC projects are meaningful and real, and the projects with Dow have been no different. Working with IBC has helped Dow to shape business strategy and future decisions. It’s also a great recruiting tool; it’s not uncommon for us to make employment offers after IBC presentations.”
